Times have obviously changed since the 1600’s where it was believed Leonardo da Vinci first illustrated the concept of contact lenses. Throughout the 20th century, contact lens history has continued to evolve and dramatic discoveries have allowed contacts to become more effective treatments for vision problems as well as fashion statements. Made from gas permeable materials, contact lenses have become safer and more comfortable, therefore making it inevitable to enter into the cosmetic contact lens market. YouKnowIt.com have a wonderful selection of crazy contacts and color contacts meaning if what we plan for the future comes true, you could actually be a real life Terminator (with less of the killing and dodgy accent of course).
Contact Lenses for Medical Use
Let’s be sensible and talk about the medicinal purposes and advantages of contact lenses of the future first. Contact lenses have proven to be a comfortable and more versatile form of correction for many eye problems including nearsightedness and farsightedness. Contact lenses have even provided a solution to the problem of astigmatism, the common occurrence of refractive errors causing blurred vision. However, the latest development in the contact lens world has pointed to the worldwide disease millions battle everyday, diabetes. Usually monitored by the skin prick method, doctors are able to assess your blood sugar level using a drop of your blood and some pH paper. Now researchers from The University of Akron have developed a contact lens that senses the glucose in your blood. If sugar is not being metabolised properly and glucose concentration builds up in the body, the contact lens will detect a problem and change colour. The benefits of this colour-changing diabetes contact lens would not only allow patients to identify pre-diabetic conditions allowing early diagnosis which is crucial for preventing diabetes from advancing, researchers hope the convenience of contact lenses could boost patient compliance to blood sugar testing, as it will reduce discomfort, inconvenience, and even cost. Overall it will be nothing but beneficial so if everything goes well, we could see these contacts in 3 years.
Futuristic Contact Lenses
I don’t think I’m the only who has ever watched films like The Terminator and Robocop and thought to myself “I wish I could see things in front of my eyes like these guys do”! Well even though these movies were well ahead of their time, they paved the way for the inevitable evolution of Bionic Contact Lenses. Especially in the last 5 years, we’ve noticed there’s been a lot of talk in the media about contacts making eye-glasses completely obsolete. Well we’re not sure how this will eventually happen but we’re looking forward to the bionic contact lens allowing us to ‘project emails before our eyes’. Scientists believe we could soon be wearing this technology that will allow us to read floating texts and emails or simply augment our sight with computer-generated images. The only problem they seem to have is finding a good power source to help power this phenomenal technology.
However, even though my next feature is not technically part of the contact lens world, we can’t help but be excited at the prospect of ‘Google Glasses’. And who knows…this could eventually turn into the next bionic contact lens to feature on YouKnowIt.com. Watch this space…
