With many different colored contact lens designs coming out on a regular basis it is a wonder what the future will hold for the fashion contact lens market. We may already have a glimpse into the future with the latest contact lenses developed by scientists at the Ghent University in Belgium. They have managed to develop a curved liquid crystal display (LCD) small enough to be embedded inside a contact lens, allowing a high resolution display in an incredible small scale.

The main challenge was to “create a very thin, spherically curved substrate with active layers that could withstand the extreme molding process” as explained by Jelle De Smet, the lead researcher on the project. The project is still in its early stages, as it still requires a power source and a receiver to retrieve signals, however early prototypes show a contact lens with a patterned dollar sign. At the moment, only simple patterns can be displayed, however with this initial breakthrough researchers envision electronic contact lenses that can display more complex patterns in the not so distant future.

These LCD lenses could be used for medical purposes, such as manipulating the amount of light let in for people with eye damage.
